What's the difference between Speech and Language?
Speech is the spoken form of a language. It is the way we say the sounds of our language (articulation), the rhythm and rate of our words (fluency), and the sound of our voice (resonance and breathe control).
Language is a group of rules or code that we learn to use in order to understand ideas and express our wants and needs in socially acceptable manner. Reading, writing, speaking and some gesture systems are all forms of language. Language is a group of rules that include:
what a word means
word tense (watch, watched, watching, will watch)
how to combine a string of words to convey meaning (ie. "The boy is playing baseball." vs. "Baseball boy the playing is"
how to convey and interpret language meaning in social situations (ie. "Would you please move your chair." vs. "Move your chair!"
